Well finally a color that I can get into! I LOVE color! This is 'THE" color of the year and I have done a lot of things in the past with this color, but now that I know it is the color of 2012...look out! Here is a piece I created recently...with guess what? TANGERINE is in the house! See the CRAZY pattern on the shoes? good ole tangerine!

It is trying it's best to give us some 'Snow Days'...love it if it would just snow us in for a few days...with nothing to do but, create, read, relax & think about what lies ahead for us in 2012. My Reps just got back from the Atlanta Gift Show...they were talking to manufacturers about my designs. I feel there are interesting things coming my way this year! At the moment I'm working furiously on some New designs that I absolutely Love...as some of you know, it's not always the case that an artist 'loves' what they do, they see room for improvement, changes, a different approach...well, not this time. I have been doing so many 'mock-ups' this past year for potnetial clients & working on a booth for the Licensing Show that I haven't had much time for just exploring...well, the time hit me a few days ago.

The original idea came out from a recent sleepless night...you know we all have them...the clock is slowly ticking away, your mind won't shut off...in my case I start creating & coming up with ideas for me to do in the studio the next day. I picked up my pencils...started to draw...first little sketch sprung onto the page...then the next...then another...and the next thing I knew I had come up with about 25 little quick sketches that made up a series. Today I'm going to explore with techniques & mediums...unleash the beast!

This week I'm creating designs for drinkware...like glasses & mugs. This is one of my artist series...I start out with old cardboard, gesso it a couple of times, not worrying about making it smooth, (I like texture) then after it dries I get out the brushes & sponges and so go town painting abstracts...I really love the freedom that this allows me. I also love making a mess with paints! Reminds me of being young & carefree! Here's to 'being FREE'!

This is a really FUN shot I got a couple of years ago around the holidays when we had SNOW...what a hoot! We don't get that fluffy white stuff often, so when we do, the whole town kind of shuts down. (Love that part...we get to...SLOW down for a bit) LET IT SNOW!

How can you go wrong with this fabulous POP of color for the season? Right now my kitchen and dining room are both RED...so I am always ready for the holidays.
(My house is painted red too...guess I like the color!)

More angels...This one is my "CUPCAKE" angel...I think a calander is in the future...I just can't stop drawing them, I wonder what that means? Forget the traditional RED & GREEN...think pink, orange, purple...go wild...go over the egde...think exciting! Isn't this TREE spectacular? I just LOVE color...I mean if you're gonna get crazy with anything, why not your Christmas Tree? Next year, put aside your usual ornaments...pick 2 opposing colors...get some fun ribbons...lights and make it a new simple, but BOLD TREE!

I've got angels on the brain...and I have to say I'm having fun drawing them...I have decided that for the next few weeks I'm just going to draw whatever calls to me...I feel like I haven't had time to explore or experiment for a few years. What better time than NOW!
I've had a lot of 'frustration' going on lately. It seems that someone wants me to change the way I draw...and the medium in which I feel most comfortable with...it isn't that I can't do 'art' another way...but this is how I'm choosing to create these days. I do it for me...I have been drawing since I was oh so young...(3) and ya know this is where I get my 'joy' from. If someone likes what I create...great, if not that's ok too...it's a BIG world and there's lots of artists out there. I think since the ideas come out of this artist's head...it ought to be what she sees & how she sees it.

My thought for today is...BE YOURSELF! LIVE WITH INTENTION!

I just can't quite get into things...I'm trying to create, but my sister's cat, Chagall is very ill and we're heading to the vet this afternoon to put him to sleep. Another animal leaving us this year...I wish we didn't get so attached to those 4 legged fur balls...but it's not gonna happen in the house. Since I've been in this home (2003) I've lost 5 animals...2 dogs, 3 cats, actually I don't like the word 'lost'...they died, no other way to say it. Life is so short with these little companions...I treasure every moment. I'm now down to 2 cats & Daddy's dog...a home is just not quite right without a lot of little pitter-patters...and meows. Take care of your fellow creatures...they are counting on you.

It is a cold & blustery day here in Portland...almost all the leaves are off the BIG maple tree...

never have I seen so many leaves! But the COLORS of this FALL have been gorgeous! The

reds are so brilliant that they almost hurt your eyes, and the yellows are just plain shocking. COLOR...I LOVE it!

Colors for 2012... Below is PANTONE'S prediction for the coming year...the word for the year is "PRESERVATION"...it is a reflection of our current economic & social climate. The overall desire to connect with our past.

Here is my entry for PINK SATURDAY & for the word PRESERVATION...

WHERE IS MY MOJO?

Ever since getting back from vacation...I've lost my mojo.
Trying to figure out where it went...I've looked under my bed~no.
I looked in the pantry~no.
I even checked in my purse~no.
Where oh where can it be? I just can't imagine where that darn thing went?
Couldn't be that my 'creativity' has taken a 'holiday'...could it?
I think 2 weeks of sun and then coming back to rain, rain,
and more rain has something to do with my MOJO...
(did it stay for a few more much needed break in the sun?)
I bet that's it...I think I'll give it until Monday...
bet I'll find it when I go out to my studio
and put on my creative apron...

It is time to take a much needed break...
gonna go in search of the BIG YELLOW ORB!
I have a house sitter & animal sitter...so I feel
that I truly can 'relax'...(I'm a little freaky about
my animals...they are after all my babies). Going to
be scouting the scenery out and soaking all the
surroundings in! I need some 'inspiration'...a change of
environment will do the trick! I adore reading...
so I think about a '12' or so books will do the trick...
also taking the game 'farkle'...nice & easy way to spend
an afternoon sipping margaritas and playing a fun game!

Well...tis Monday and I think I'm gonna go out and about
and get some much needed inspiration. See what the folks are doing
out in the big world. Sometimes I just need a 'jolt' of new things I haven't
seen to get me inspired...like paper stores, shoe stores, book stores,
art stores...actually driving around in a new neighborhood
is always fun and can be just the 'thing' I need to INSPIRE!

'teen-age' girl...I think I can handle that. I created a few designs
that were inspired by "Mazie"...my hip teenager.

Pinking reminds me of my Mom...she was a fabulous seamstress...
I however never could get the hang of sewing, I tried...but it just
wasn't for moi! When sissy & I were getting things organized
for our Garage Sale last weekend...I came across one of my
Barbies...(one with the bubble hair-do) I also found some clothes
that Mom had made me for Babs! She sewed me everything from
wedding dresses to a grey wool coat & muffler that had real 'mink'
trim...can you imagine? She was something on her good old
Singer...that machine sits on a shelf in the studio...looking down
on sissy & I creating. How appropriate...Mom was the person
that always said I could do anything...especially draw. How
lucky was I? EXTREMELY!
Have a truly fantastic PINK DAY!

Mom's little Singer...(it was in a flood about 15 years ago.)
but it does have a place of honor!

In the middle of a job...the damn printer went down...
something is wacko with the computer...why is it just
when I get started on something new...a machine
gives me fits? Just lucky I guess! Working on or trying to work
on some comps for some dinnerware. Also just sent some of

Well, I'm back from the BIG SHOW in Las Vegas...but I picked up a bug down there?
Starting getting sick on the last day, Thursday, the 16th...drove home or sissy did while I coughed & hacked! Been down with this YUCK all week...tired of it. Today...I'm in the studio writing emails to all the people/contacts I meet at the Show. All in all I've got to say the response was great! Meet a lot of interesting people...from everywhere...like, Poland to South Korea...I already have 2 people that are sending me contracts for work...YIPPEE!!!
We talked about designing things like...back packs, purses, tableware, stationery, stamps, clothes, checks, wall plaques, etc. My mind is spinning and I'm so ready to get to creating. Met a few other designers/illustrators...they were very gracious and shared some of their thoughts with me. (Cathy Heck was especially generous)! THANKS to Cathy!!! Check her work out here. Since last year I went to Surtex in New York & this year I chose Licensing Expo in Vegas...I'd have to say that I think that New York is better for me...even though I meet a lot of people in Vegas, with the majority of the show about the BIG COMPANIES...like , Disney, Mattel, Hasbro, Lucas Films, etc, I feel that the Studio/Design section gets kind of lost. Since I've got a lot more pattern/surface designs that I'm now doing I think I'll be back at SURTEX next year. Anyway...a good time was had and I think it will be a good show for me.

On to writing more emails to contacts and designing !

FABULOUS...day all around...met with a lot of new people that want to do business with me...call me happy! : )
Also talked with another designer, Cathy Heck...she has been in the licensing biz for over 25 years...picked her brain a little...always good to ask a LOT of questions...particularly from a pro...and that she is. Her work is fabulous...click here to see her work.
Met Lou from 'Operation Repo'...told him we were 'closet watchers' of his show...(we certainly can't admit to all the we watch it)...LOL He was nice enough to have his pic taken with us...what a HOOT!

We leave for Vegas own week from today...

and I am so ready for it! I feel that this is gonna be a

great show. I kinda wish I had gone to SURTEX too,

but since I did that last year...I decided to try the

Bigger of the Licensing shows...

(Licensing International Expo celebrated its 30th

 anniversary in 2010.  The 2010 show saw 1900 booths 

showcasing almost 400 exhibitors, 

with  more than 5000 brands represented. 

There were 21,000 pre-registered  attendees). 

I have sent out emails to various manufacturers & licencees...

here's hoping that great things happen! 

I've got something to CROW about!

...thinking of a carefree Spring day in Paris...I head to the 6th Arroindissment,Rive Gauche...the center of intellectual & artistic life in Paris.  

I find myself a little neighborhood Bistro

& take a seat at an outside table,

order a glass of vin, relax & take in the amazing view 

that is on parade going past me!

I start to sketch some of the fabulous people

& things around me...

I strike up a conversation with a couple beside me...

we all decide that being on Holiday 

should be 'mandatory'!

Ahhh...it's all coming back to me...

the 'sights' are truly inspiring!

PARIS...I'm coming...soon.

Okay...back to reality...the drawing board.

WHEE!!! It was so exciting to see that package from UPS on tuesday...

it had my latest addition~FABRICS! Now I'm having everything from...

tote bags to place mats sewn up for the Big Show.
Thank goodness for a 'sister' that sews!
This is the last of the stuff that has to be done~

so with only about 3 weeks left before we hit the road...

Lolli-pops & roses...things are looking a lot more like spring here...now if I only had the drive to get in the yard. The Studio is yanking my thoughts back to the ole drawing board. At the moment I'm working on products for my Collections...hopefully they'll be up on the web site by this Friday. Not having the best of luck with my web person...they're slow! I decided to do some changing with my site, about a month ago...sorry I did now. I NEED someone to teach me how to do the site myself! Anyway...off to another wonderful day of creating.

Here it is...already? How is that...every week it seems to sneak up on me. Is that because I'm getting older? Hell NO! It must be Global Warming...yup that's it! Today is another wet one here...beginning to wonder where spring went? I've been working on creating more "Fabrics"...& helping with my Web site. I wish I could do the website thing myself...but I'm not fluent in HTML...geez! Never did I think I'd be talking in 'computer' lingo. Ahhh, how things change.

I heard from some old friends this week, that I used to work with...at a very intense business...to say the least. Just thinking about 'sleeping' on the office floor with the 'bubble wrap' as my pillow...sounds nuts, I know. Well, the 'experience' in this company was not one I would have wanted to miss! Can't wait till saturday to meet up with a bunch a FABULOUS ladies. Here's to Great People!

Brings back the ole days of me & my little royal blue bug...oh what great times we had!
My Dad got it for me on the 1st day of school in the 11th grade...there it was sitting in the driveway...all for me. What a Dad...I didn't ask for it...he just thought why not? He was the BEST!!! I was definately a 'hit' with all my 'car-less' friends. I've been thinking lately...maybe there is a NEW BUG in my future...I think I'll take it Black with a soft back top (convertible, of course).
Well, I'm kinda taking it easy in the studio today...playing catch-up. Tomorrow is Sunday...the day I do NO work in the studio. I used to be in here everyday, but a few months ago...I decided I needed a breather...so it's VEG Day tomorrow!

My Web site is down for re-construction...trying to get it done ASAP...but if you have a web site you know how that goes. Talk about wetness yesterday...did it rain? YES! Poured, actually... & we might break a 'record'...the MOST rain ever for March....yee gawds!...but I guess I still count myself l lucky, if that is all it is...ya' know, no flooding, no tornados, no fires, etc! Living in the Northwest, we're rather lucky with our 'mild' weather. Tomorrow...I get back to creating...(today has been taxes) I know I'm late...but I hate numbers!
